What moves the price of a lot
- Quality. Buyers taste every lot before the sale. Brightness, colour, strength and briskness set its price against other lots of the same grade.
- Grade. Primary grades (BP1, PF1, PD and D1) sell above secondary grades such as fannings and BMF. Our grade guide explains each one.
- Factory and region. Teas from the slopes of Mount Kenya and the Aberdares differ from those grown west of the Rift Valley, and some factories regularly sell at a premium.
- Season. Supply rises after the rains, and the character of the leaf changes with the weather.
- Demand. Pakistan took 39% of Kenya’s tea exports in the first quarter of 2026, so its buying moves the market.
From auction price to your port
The auction price is the start. A delivered price adds:
- The auction price of each lot, paid in US dollars.
- The tea export levy: 0.8% of the auction value since 1 May 2026. Value-added tea in small retail packs is exempt.
- Warehousing, handling and export documents in Mombasa.
- Our service fee, agreed with you before we buy.
- Sea freight and insurance for CFR or CIF delivery to your port.
Ask for a quote for your grade and port and we will show you each part.
What importers pay
In July 2026 Pakistan imported 18,967 tonnes of Kenyan tea at an average declared value of USD 2.51 a kilo, across all grades. That was 88% of Pakistan’s black tea imports by weight that month.
Questions
How often are Kenyan tea prices set?
Every week, at the Mombasa Tea Auction. Each lot is sold on its own, so prices are set lot by lot.
Why is a quote higher than the auction average?
The average covers every grade and quality sold that week. A quote is for one grade and quality, and it adds the export levy, handling, documents, freight and our fee.
Can I get this week’s prices for my grade?
Yes. Email us the grade, quantity and port, and we will send current prices with a breakdown.
